Tuesday (More left over Party snacks)

One of my co-workers was converted to full time this week (he had been brought on as a consultant to hire).  So to welcome him, they brought in fruit and DONUTS!!!!!   Some how I was able to stop myself and eat only 1 donut.  That was VERY HARD TO DO.

Yesterdays constant use of the snack drawer was too much for me, so this morning I went to Jewel and picked up a bag of tortilla chips.

Since these are the same foods as yesterday, they will be presented with no commercial interruptions.
But we will have some appearances of other snack drawer celebrities.

 (only drank half. TOO sweet)

Not pictured is the half a bagel I had tonight at Panera.

Tomorrow and Thursday will look similar.

Monday (Leftover party snacks)

Saturday night was the AWESOME party Debbie through for me.  We had left over snacks.  So Sunday night I divided them up into 4 servings of each item that was left.  I did not do 5, since our team goes out to eat on Fridays, so I needed food for Monday - Thursday.

At this point I decided to use the snack drawer and its evil tempting snacks to my advantage.  Instead of bringing in left over chips and pretzels, I just brought in the other stuff.

My mother in law made me this black olive dip (snack drawer pretzels)

Deb bought meatless taco dip (snack drawer Doritos)

We had a cheese tray

I forgot which day last week that we went to Chicago Prime, but I had leftover mediterranean tomatoes and onions.  So I bought a salad at work, and added some gardinera and some other peppers.  (then I forgot to take a picture of the tomatoes).  At the end there was a LOT of "sauce" left, so I bought 2 rolls and did not let that go to waste.

afternoon snacks were...

Humas (snack drawer Sourdough pretzels)

Guacamole (and a return of the snack drawer Doritos)

Dessert at home was 1 of the AWESOME bowling themed cupcakes.

How my journey has been

A couple people have asked me to summerize my bumps in the road so far.

I will say that from when I started in early December until the first week of February I did a really good job of cooking stuff on my own and limiting the amount of eating out that I did.   Then we had a cruise scheduled for February 7 - 14th.  So the week right before we left on the cruise I resorted to a lot of store bought items, some veggie burgers, some frozen veggies, maybe even some take out salads, or veggie subs.   On the cruise I was lucky because there were SO many good veggie options that I was able to maintain my weight and really not over eat. Then Valentines day hit.  That is the day my Mother passed away.   So for the past 6 weeks I have been living in a fog of swirling emotions and events.

I do not think that I have had a weekday breakfast since then.   At least at lunch I have been trying to eat salads from the cafeteria, but dinners have been at restaurants, since Deb and I have needed to eat away some of the grief.   The amazing thing has been that I really do eat a LOT less food than I normally do, so even when we would go out, I would not pig out, I would order whatever the smallest meatless option was.  We have had house guest for a bunch of the time, so we have been ordering in food, or going out to let them sample the Chicago food scene (John is from here, but his wife Andrea is not, so we had to show her the good places) Lou's, portillos, Dappers....   Again, the choices I am making, while not "healthy", are still a lot healthier than I had been in the past.  Recently at work my boss has decided that he wanted to provide a "snack" drawer for his team.  This is just TOO tempting, knowing that it is less than 10 feet from my desk.

I am so glad to realize that the 2 months of being strict on my eating style has turned it in to a habit.
I have received so many compliments from you guys and the people I see on a daily or weekly basis. This really keeps me from falling off the deep and and going back to my old ways.  I am much more open to trying new foods and enjoying the new flavors and textures that I am experiencing.

I really want this to be a FOREVER way of life, so I am content with staying the same weight.  If I can go through a month where I feel that I ate AWFUL (relatively) and actually lose 5 or 6 pounds, it really helps to motivate me.

I know a lot of women are now saying "it is not fair, guys lose weight so much easier".  That may be true, but I honestly tell you that I probably used to eat around 1,600 calories a MEAL, now I am probably around that for a day.   So I have dropped a lot in terms of what I ate.  A typical person probably eats around 2,500 calories a day, and you probably should never drop below 1,500.  So if you are that person, then my results will not be the same as yours.  I am probably consuming 20,000 less calories a week, but that would take a normal person 3 weeks to do.   My old lifestyle was NOT healthy, but it would have been easy to maintain for the rest of my life, because eating that much would have guaranteed me a shorter life.

Losing my Dad when he was 66 and my Mom when she was 67 SUCKS.  Here I sit 45 and both of my parents are gone, worse yet my sisters are 43 and 32.   We don't have kids, but I don't want to think that my life is more then 2/3rds over.  I know that tomorrow is not promised to anyone, but I want to do what gives me the best odds of making it to tomorrow (and beyond).

I write this blog for a couple reason
1) Just to see that I could do it
2) To be able to go back and look at my journey
3) To inspire (hopefully) some others, if they see a MEAT LOVING FAT GUY make a change and keep it up for 4 months, maybe they can start their journey.
4) It helps me think about what I put on my plate.  Taking a picture of everything I eat, makes me stop and wonder if it is worth it.

This is not an easy path, but it also is NOT nearly as hard as I thought it would be.  There are so many  "healthy" choices out there and they actually taste good.

Again, I cannot express how overwhelmed I am when a fried of mine tells me they read this blog.  The fact that 30+ (almost 40) people seem to view this every day, is a driving force.  I do not know who it is that sees the blog, I only know the count. So I say Thank You for keeping me motivated, and hopefully I am doing something to motivate you to make a change.

Weigh in #17 and Easter Brunch

Saturday Deb threw a party for me to celebrate me shooting 300.   We needed to celebrate the good things in life, since the start of this food journey seemed to correspond with a bunch of unfortunate events in our life.  But with spring here, it is a start of NEW and better things.

I started the morning with a small snack.

For lunch we tried Jet's pizza.   Since I did not want a whole veggie pizza by myself.  So I ordered what they called a boat.   It was pizza dough as the "bun" and a bunch of veggies.  It was pretty good.
Deb really liked the pizza (they got a meat lovers special).

The party had a bunch of the normal party snacks, so I grazed a whole bunch of those.  Here is 1 picture of a plate I had

So again I was not expecting much when I weighed in, but somehow again I was down 1.2 pounds.  I was 254.   I am in shock that in this past month I have been able to eat "normal" food, and actually lose weight.  I really reinforces that I am making better food choices.

Sunday was easter and we had brunch at Grampa's country club  (the 101 year old Gramps!!!)

Thankfully they had a TON of non-meat options.
Here are my plates.
Omelet, tater tots, deviled egg, fruit, cheeses

Waffle, pretzel bread, raisin bun, potatoes. The asian salad up top was NOT good, so did not eat.

Mint, pecan, coffee flavored, moose, dark chocolate and peanut butter, tiramisu and some BAD tasting coconut.

I did not eat all of this.  Some of them I took a bite and did not finish, some I did eat all of.

Tomorrow I will write a post about a summary of the ups and downs I have faced on this 4 month journey.

Fasting Thursday, Granite City Friday

On Thursday I decided I needed to purge my bad eating habits a bit, so I fasted.  I did have some coffee and some water, but no food.

Friday we did our usual group outing for lunch.  Our restaurant of choice was Granite City.   They had a veggie wrap and sweet potato fries.  Some how I resisted the urge to order a beer.

We went to Chicago Prime Italian for dinner.
I ordered the Mediterranean "salad".  It turned out to be a plate of cucumbers, olives, onions and a LOT of tomatoes.   It had a good flavor, but it was too much of 1 thing.  I did have about 3 pieces of bread.

McDonald's!!!

For some reason I had a craving for McDonald's today.... so I indulged.
I had a fruit and yogurt parfait.

and 2 egg mcmuffins NO MEAT

SNACK DRAWER yelled at me today and I kept going over there.
Starting with chips.
These were really good.  Very salty and vinegary.

I am addicted to these.

not sure why I kept snacking today!

I did actually had a salad at lunch time and ice tea

I needed some chocolate, so I had these fake oreos.

Then I had what I thought was going to be my last food for the day.

The reason I said THOUGHT was that at bowling tonight we had 100 "bowler bucks" that we have to spend by April 6th (our last day of bowling).  So my teammates ordered pizza and chicken fingers.  I ordered the southwest veggie wrap with sweet potato fries.

In order to get my self out of this BAD eating habit, I am going to fast the next 2 days.  I am just in a grazing mood, and cannot keep that up.

Tuesday

Breakfast was more snack drawer.  (I hate/love that thing)

Pretzel bits.

Fruit strip  (this IS healthy)

Tried another Jalapeño bar.  This one did have a little kick

Deb and I both had doctor appointments around 2:30, so we had not eaten lunch, so we stopped at Taco Bell on the way home
I ordered a Cheesy bean and rice burrito, a bean burrito and a cheese quesadilla.

Monday

No breakfast on Monday, so had a big salad for lunch.

Decided to crumble in some pretzels.

And some Iced Tea

Then I had to try some stuff in the snack drawer
This was a SAD party.  No more of those :-(

These were pretty good.  1oz is not a lot of chips

 These were okay

 Not strong, barely tasted Jalapeño

We had Boston Market for dinner.   I had the side sampler plate
Sweet potato casserole, veggies and cinnamon apples

and a Brownie SNUCK on to my plate
